for the fall semester except:
September 14th (no space available -- we can just cancel that week or

November 23rd (Thanksgiving)

Summer Meetings

Since the Commons is rather quiet during the summer, our meetings will move to the comfy couches outside the Shockoe Room, starting May 18th.

The May 11th meeting will still follow the spring schedule. And while we had the Metro Room booked, they've been putting us in Shockoe the past few weeks, so look for us there first!

Knit Wits will remain on Thursdays at 12 noon for the Spring 2006 semester. However, all meetings will now take place in the Commons Metro Room, located on the first floor of the Commons, across from the Forum Room.

Quilt Repair

Wanted to pass on the word about CRAZY QUILT on Cary St. On January 20th they are having a "quilt repair" day - Bring your damaged or unfinished quilt or heirloom textile for free consultation. Class Update

The recycled yarn class has been cancelled. I would suggest that we look at doing it as a fun diversion during Knit Wits - but it can be frustrating and time consuming to take apart a sweater...and none of us need that over our lunch hour!

These days it feels like there is so much going wrong and you can never do enough. We've got to pick and choose our charities and how we spend our free time helping others. Thanks to Diane for passing along the Lion Brand site on knitting for charity. Maybe one knit stitch at a time we can make a difference.

Recycled Yarn and Beginning Knitting

We'll be doing the Short Courses again this semester. I am scheduled to do a class on recycled yarn (taking apart a sweater) on Tuesday, October 4 and the following week, Tuesday, October 11 we'll do another beginning knitting class.

If any of the "knit wits" are interested in helping to instruct on either topic, let me know. Students are provided with the materials for the classes - all I need from you is your expertise (and your patience!). To create the recycled yarn, you've got to "knot" be bothered by tangles!

Thrifty Knitters - NEW Student Knitting Group

The students have finally taken the needles into their own hands! A new student knitting group is forming - Thrifty Knitters! The group will meet Monday and Thursday at 5:00 PM in the Floyd Lounge of the University Student Commons (just outside of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs). All who want to learn to knit or already knit are welcome. There is a $5 joining fee which will help the group get going. If you are interested, contact Annie at ridoutab@vcu.edu

Recycled Yarn

At the very successful Teeni Weeni Knit Bikini class last night, we got to discussing Short Courses for next semester. We got a very strong and positive response to a short course on recycled yarn - ripping (or as Jackie says "Frogging") apart old sweaters from thrift stores. It's a great way to get yarn cheap! Since fall is a long way off, here's a "how to" website that can show you how to rip it and rip it good!

Learn to Crochet...you know you want to!

Learn to Crochet The bikini pattern calls for simple a simple crochet chain, but once I got started I wanted to learn more. I know that most of us knitters claim ignorance when it comes to crochet, but I for one think it could be useful - I've seen plenty of patterns that call for both knit and crochet techniques. Tweeny Weeny Knit Bikini

Hello Ladies! Knit Wits will host another SHORT COURSE this spring on Wednesday, March 9. However, this time we'll be knitting bikinis! I know there's probably not a ONE of us who would be caught dead in one, but I think it might be fun and definetely something to attract students.

I've got one or two patterns. If you know of any "swimwear" knitting patterns, please let me know. And if you are interested in participating, let me know that too!

Who or what is a Knit Wit?

We've gotten emails and phone calls regarding who is "allowed" to be a Knit Wit - luckily, we have no restrictions. We are primarily a faculty/staff knitting group, but we welcome crocheters, cross-stichers, needlepointers, etc. You might be able to teach us something!

We also welcome students but encourage those students who REALLY like to knit to think about forming a student organization. A registered student organization can get funding from the Student Activitiy Fee, the ability to reserve space in the Commons and services through the Student Organization Service Area.

If you are coming to Knit Wits to LEARN to knit, please bring yarn and size 8, 9 or 10 needles. We recommend bamboo needles since they do not slip as much as metal and are easier to learn on. Also, IF you are coming to learn it would be a good idea to email us and let us know in advance so we can be sure someone is there to teach you.
